Book Talk Friday

I know you have been anxiously waiting to hear about my new book!!! I am currently reading, The Camel Club, by David Baldacci. I've read a handful of his books and this one isn't as good as others. This is the first of a trilogy and I can say the second in this series, The Collectors, is GREAT!!! (I read it prior to knowing it was part of a trilogy.) It could be that by the time I crawl into bed to read, I'm about ready to drop dead.....but I can tell you Camel Club doesn't capture my attention like The Collectors did. The Collectors was one that you could stay up all night reading, carry it with you everywhere b/c you never know when you'd have two minutes of down time that you could continue to read.

I digress.....The Camel Club is an interesting read and it does give you a lot of background knowledge on the characters you'll continue to follow through the trilogy. Stone, the main character has an unknown past and lives in a cemetary, he's the grounds keeper! Stone is searching for the truth and has a tent stating this outside the grounds of the White House. He had his posse witness something they shouldn't have and the book is a cat and mouse game of finding out the why's of this, all while trying to stay alive. There a lots of twists and turns and it does leave the reader with a lot of questions. It leaves you with questions about our government and how much does J.Q. Public really know. Does our government have people assassinated? How much power does Homeland Security, the CIA and FBI really have? What do they know about you and your family?? It's questions like this that jump out at you.

Would I recommend it? Yes, I would. Who knows, maybe by next Friday I'll be more fired up about it....and maybe I won't be so very tired either!!! I do have two other books waiting in the wings.....so I'll have to decide who is the next lucky read!!!! My goal is to have it finished and be able to give you a two for one next week: the end of my current one and the beginnings of my new choice.

Friday Book Talk

Jodi Picoult's newest book, Second Glance, is fantastic. If you didn't read the original post regarding it, please do.

I spent all day Sunday, lazing on the couch (that's what happens when child is with grandparents and husband is fishing, he even took the dog!! It was HEAVEN!). This book totally captivated me. So much, when I put the book down, I felt like I was leaving them and the characters would miss me peering into their lives! I know that sounds weird, but if you've ever been into a book, you know what I'm talking about.

The book takes a weird turn and Jodi introduces us to eugenics, which I would bet most of us have never heard of. This movement occured in the 1930's, here in the US! It is very disturbing and the reason it was haulted was because of the action of Hitler in Germany! Many, many states had sterilization laws on the books and VT is the only state that STILL has them on their books!!! Shameful.

Anyway, you learn a little about our disturbing history....and we are on a slippery slope of repeating ourselves with genetic sampling, testing and selection.

Back to the book, as usual, she takes you for turns that you would have never expected and it is a SENSATIONAL read!!! I was getting dressed one morning and one of the puzzle pieces fell together for me and I SO wanted to go back to the book to see if I was correct!

I'm already onto my next book....can't tell you what it is....you'll have to return for next Friday's edition!

Book Talk Fridays

I am going to try to start talking about my current reading selection every Friday. Now, as you know, my intention is there and we'll have to see how well it goes!!!

Jodi Picoult's new Second Glance

This is a page turner! In true Jodi form, there are smatterings of the characters and just enough info to get you hooked before she turns to another character. I'm not one to believe in ghosts and the paranormal, but this one will have you looking at things differently. I'm not even half way done, but I'm desparately trying to fit all of the pieces together. And if Jodi is true to form, she'll surprise me at the end and I'll have it all wrong!! When a cop walks into a half-torn down house, walks to where the bathroom was, no pipes or fixtures, and hears water, a mirror is left hanging on a stud (like how did it survive this long?) and the mirror is fogged up b/c of the steam from the running water (which is only heard, remember, no pipes) and the cop looks into the mirror and sees hands coming from inside the mirror placed on the mirror and then "HELP" written on the fogged mirror....WEIRD!!! I know, I don't do it justice in my retelling, but it is good. And it isn't Stephen King creepy!!!
